The Best Auntie EVAH!
July 30, 2008
This beautiful girl just turned eighteen a couple of weeks ago. For her 18th birthday, she had a couple of requests. They were, in no particular order:
- To see this movie.
- To go out clubbing with her co-workers.
- To get another tattoo. (Her sister is handling that. Cool Aunts can only do so much!)
- For me to take her to this store. (NSFW)
Oh, sweet jeebus, the movie was great, she had fun with her friends, she’s planning what tattoo to get, but the highlight was our trip to Fairvilla.
The look on her face as we toured the shop was priceless. It took us two whole trips around the store before she could summon up the courage to ask questions.
It took us three before she would actually touch stuff and push buttons.
I think she was intrigued and appalled all in one fell swoop. She bought herself a shirt. I bought her a little something to remember the trip.
(Emphasis on little and joke gift. She can buy her own hardware, thankyouverymuch!)
Her reaction in the S&M room when she saw all the accoutrements? I’ll remember that one for the rest of my life. Hilarious. Worth. It.

I tell this story here because well, it’s funny and I asked her if I could share it. I write about her on this blog because she lives with me for now, but in 62 days she will be reporting to Boot Camp to serve in the United States Army. I want it to be known that we will miss her, but that we are so proud of her. She’s an amazing young lady, and although she has tested me on a few occasions (what teenager doesn’t?), what she is doing for herself, her country, and for her future is incredible. We feel so blessed to be a part of her life.
What has a cool aunt done for you?

I’ve been there before! Happy birthday to your niece and please tell her thank you for me and my family for serving our country and its inhabitants!

You know, I’m typically worried that kids aren’t mature enough to know what they are getting into when they enlist in the military. However, your young niece had the foresight to understand that she would fare better with the (I assume) seasoned advice of a woman with real-life recommendations (more assumptions) when entering a “adult store,” as opposed to stumbling around it with a fellow giggling teen like I did. Most kids her age would want to go with a peer because of their awkward feelings about the whole deal. So, good for her for wanting to do things the right way. LOL
