This is a Test, This is Only a Test

For those of you who are living under a rock, Florida is currently being pummeled by some strong winds, some rain, and a few tornadoes.
You might know of it? The weathermen have named it Tropical Storm Fay.
I call it a mighty pain in my asteroid.
That’s because we started the new school year on Monday. And it went incredibly well. My kids were dressed and ready and we were on time. I feel the need to write that again:
We. Were. On. Time.
That rip on the space-time continuum? Blame that one on me. You’re welcome.
I work in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom this year. (Yes, I asked for the position. No, I’m not crazy. Okay, maybe I am a little.)
This year’s Pre-K program is LOADS better. We no longer have 36 children. It’s 18 kids for at least half a day, several stay for the full day. There’s lunch in the lunchroom. We go to enrichment specials. We have playground time only once a day.
In short, Heaven.
Monday was an incredibly smooth day. All the kids came to class. Not one of them screamed or cried or held onto a parent. (Last year? We had a child run AFTER her mother screaming for her. It was wrenching to have to hold her back once we got her.) We ran ON TIME. The kids even got rest time. I got a 15 minute morning break.
I have worked for almost two years now and this was the first time I have had a “break” that wasn’t lunch. It was surreal. It was also nice.
I could get used to this.
So, Monday went great. All the kids had a great day, my sons LOVE their new teacher/teachers/classes, and we’re excited about the new school year.
Until they found out that we would be home from school the next two days because of Tropical Storm Fay.
Then they got downright apoplectic. What did you say? NO SCHOOL FOR TWO DAYS? Yes, please.
The only problem that I have with all of this is that the first day was SO GOOD that now all it can be is a practice run. Thursday is now the official First Day of School.
I’m hoping for the best but fearing the worst. I can’t help it. Monday went WAY too well.
See, Northern states? We’re inching ever closer to your start dates. That’s progress, yes?

And you just know that Thursday will be canceled too since the hurricane will be right off Daytona.

If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all!
We get snow days up here in the North; you get Hurricane Fays. I mean days. Hope all is well and you dry out soon!

Fay is a prickly thorn in the side! My kids were all doing wonderfully…..like you, we were on time and on schedule. Fay didn’t trouble us like they were saying….so we are starting again Wednesday. Now to keep an eye on the next wave coming….
